Kids at Hope: Call for Ambassadors
Just two days left to apply! Application deadline is September 30th at noon.
ARPA is looking for individuals interested in being ambassadors for an inspiring, empowering, and transformative approach for serving children and youth called “Kids at Hope.”
You provide the passion and enthusiasm, and we’ll provide ongoing resources, learning opportunities, and support. While being selected as a Kids at Hope Ambassador doesn’t have a specific cash value, it will provide you with what you need to make a powerful difference in the lives of children and youth in your organization and community.
Through the ACE (Active, Creative, Engaged) Communities initiative, ARPA is pleased to launch Kids at Hope in Alberta. It is an innovative concept, grounded in 13 years of research from its founding organization in Arizona, which states and demonstrates that all children are capable of success, NO EXCEPTIONS!
Currently, ARPA is seeking 20 ambassadors from a variety of agencies, departments, schools, or communities to become ambassadors for Kids at Hope in Alberta. Please click through the following links to view the program backgrounder and application online. The application deadline is Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 (noon), and notification of conditional acceptance will be sent out by October 9th.
Kids at Hope is not another program; it is a belief system, supported by strategies to transform culture, and then enhanced by programs. Kids at Hope inspires, empowers, and transforms families, youth serving organizations (schools, recreation and parks departments, non-profit organizations, etc.), and entire communities to create an environment where all children experience success, NO EXCEPTIONS! For more information about Kids at Hope, including frequently asked questions, please visit www.kidsathope.org.
We look forward to hearing from you about your organization/community! If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Finnigan at (780) 644-4797 or jfinnigan@arpaonline.ca.

On November 26th, 2009 the Recreation for Life Foundation, its allied partner, the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), and their many sponsors and supporters will present the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence at the inaugural showcase event.
The Awards will recognize and celebrate individuals or working groups within Alberta’s corporate and business sector for their creativity, innovation, excellence and overall contribution in designing, building, and providing services to support recreation, parks and wellness in our province and its communities.
It is of the utmost importance that we are able to apprise the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association stakeholders about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence. We expect that they will be very interested in this awards program and may, in fact, be a major source of award nominations. We are hopeful that you will be able to assist us with the dissemination of information about our awards program and the showcase event itself.
Specifically, we are requesting that the ARPA membership, through its outreach communication channels, promote to their colleagues and affiliates the Recreation for Life Foundation’s Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence by:
- informing your colleagues and affiliates about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence through various communication channels;
- distributing sponsorship opportunities in support of this event;
- passing on further electronic communiqués provided by the Foundation; and
- posting a link to the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence on your website to enable your associates and affiliated organizations to learn more about the awards program nomination and registration process.
We are expecting to launch this exciting awards program in June in hopes that the nomination deadline of August 28th will render multiple nominations in all of the six award categories.
Should you have any questions about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence program please contact the Recreation for Life Foundation office. Please visit the following links to view the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence brochure, nominations form, and sponsorship opportunities. All of these materials may also be viewed on the Awards website at www.Awards.RecreationforLife.org.
We are currently seeking sponsorship support and would greatly appreciate any support to any one of the many sponsorship opportunities.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and expedient action to this request as we move forward in disseminating the necessary information.
Sincerely,
Randall Conrad,
Committee Chair

The Report on the Public Fatality Inquiry regarding the drowning death of an 8 year old Alberta boy was recently released by the Minister of Justice for the Province of Alberta and the Attorney General. Throughout the inquiry, the Lifesaving Society provided vital testimony to the Honourable Judge Bruce A. Millar to assist him in making his findings. In response to the reports release the Society circulated the attached media release to Alberta media outlets and has responded to a number of inquiries from both media and affiliates.
The Lifesaving Society concurs with the Honourable Judge Millar’s recommendations. The Society’s Public Aquatic Facility Safety Standards (PAFSS) have incorporated similar recommendations and guidelines since 2001. The recommendations coming from the fatality inquiry have been posted in the Safety Management section of our website: http://www.lifesaving.org/safety_management.php?page=479.
Judge Millar’s recommendations reinforce the need to develop and maintain strong risk management practices. The Society fully believes that most if not all of our affiliates have these practices in place. It is important to put the recommendations into context in respect to each of your unique needs and facility. In light of the inquiries findings, this is a good time to review your risk management practices.
The Society can help, check out the resources available on-line or contact Society staff with your questions. You may want to request a topical assessment or comprehensive safety audit. In further support, the Society is planning an Aquatic Safety Management Institute in November, 2009. This institute will launch a number of programs that align to Judge Millar’s recommendations.
